Garage Floor Ideas: Stripes, Chequerboards and Outline Squares

Interlocking tiles let you design the floor, not just cover it. Here are four layouts that work, and how to plan your own.

A tiled garage floor doesn't have to be one flat colour. Because every 40 x 40cm tile clips to the next, you can lay out a pattern as easily as a plain floor. Here are four layouts that work, with a few colour pairings to get you started.

1. Solid colour: clean and timeless

One colour across the whole floor gives a calm, uniform finish that makes the car the star. Frozen Black is the classic and hides tyre marks well. Nardo Grey looks modern and doesn't show dust as quickly. Alpine White bounces light around the room, which is why detailers like it, though it shows dirt sooner.

2. Stripes: a nod to the pit lane

Run one or two full-length stripes in a bright colour through a darker base. It's simple to plan, looks great from the door and naturally lines up the car. Speed Yellow, Toronto Red or Velocity Blue on Frozen Black always stand out. Our single garage kit uses two stripes; the double kit uses four.

3. Outline square: frame the car

A rectangle of colour around where the car parks makes the floor look designed rather than just covered. In our kits the outline is 4 x 2.4m, built from 28 coloured tiles in a Frozen Black floor. In a double garage, give each car its own square.

4. Chequerboard: the show garage classic

Alternating colours across the whole floor is the boldest look of all. Black and white is the original, but Frozen Black with Nardo Grey is subtler, and Frozen Black with Viper Green or Voodoo Blue makes a statement.

Colour pairings that work

  • Frozen Black and Nardo Grey: understated and modern
  • Frozen Black and Speed Yellow: high contrast, easy to see in a dim garage
  • Nardo Grey and Toronto Red: a sporty look on a lighter base
  • Frozen Black and Alpine White: the classic chequerboard

How to plan your own layout

Draw the garage to scale on squared paper, with one square for each 40cm tile. A 6.4m wall is 16 tiles; a 3.2m wall is 8. Colour in your pattern, count the tiles of each colour and add 5 to 10% to each for cuts. Then order by the pack of 20 in each colour.

If your garage is close to a standard size, our garage kits come pre-planned in solid, stripe, square and chequered layouts in up to 13 colours, with ramps included. There's even a motorcycle bay kit to give your bike its own spot.
