Gym flooring has three jobs: protect the floor underneath, protect your kit, and give you a comfortable, grippy surface to train on. Get the thickness wrong and you either pay for more than you need or crack a slab the first time a loaded bar comes down. Here's how to choose.
Start with how you train
Cardio, stretching and bodyweight work: 10mm
For a treadmill, a bike, yoga, mobility and bodyweight circuits, 10mm interlocking rubber is plenty. It's warmer and softer than concrete, cuts noise and gives a sure footing. Our 10mm tiles come in 50 x 50cm and 1 x 1m sizes, in black or with a white, blue or rose fleck that hides dust and chalk.
Dumbbells and free weights: 20mm
Once you're putting weights down, step up to 20mm. Our 20mm 50 x 50cm gym tiles are square-edged rather than interlocking: you lay them tight together, which makes it easy to rearrange the gym or lift out one tile later. They come in plain black, fleck colours and oak, grey oak and walnut-look tops if the gym is part of the house.
Deadlifts, cleans and dropped bars: heavy duty 20mm, 1 x 1m
For a lifting area, choose our heavy duty 1 x 1m tiles. They're 20mm thick, connect together into one solid surface and are rated for weight drops of up to 150kg without damaging the floor underneath. Each tile covers 1m², so the maths is easy.
A mixed gym? Mix the floor
You don't have to floor the whole room in the thickest option. Plenty of home gyms use 10mm across the room with a heavy duty zone where the rack or platform sits. Just keep the thicknesses in separate zones so the floor stays level where you walk.
How many tiles?
- 50 x 50cm tiles: 4 per m². A 3 x 4m gym (12m²) takes 48 tiles.
- 1 x 1m tiles: 1 per m². The same gym takes 12 tiles.
Measure the floor in metres, multiply length by width and round up. Packs of 4 and 20, and a pallet of 50 heavy duty tiles, bring the price per tile down.
Garage gyms
A lot of home gyms live in the garage. Rubber is a great fit: it takes the cold out of the slab and protects it from dropped plates. Our interlocking 10mm rubber is even tough enough for a garage floor that cars drive over, so the space can still work as a garage too.
One thing to know: free delivery doesn't apply to our 1 x 1m rubber tiles, and the delivery cost is shown at checkout.
